Shining to premiere new album “One One One” at by:Larm!
When Shining released their 5th studio album, “Blackjazz”, they took the whole world by surprise. They had discovered a new black gold that no one knew existed: Free jazz and metal combined into a new industrial alloy. As a result, Blackjazz was hailed by all sides of the music scene, from The New York Times, through Metal Hammer, to Pitchfork.
In 2011, the term “Blackjazz” was further solidified by their marvelous and high octane live DVD aptly named “Live Blackjazz”. Now three years later, their unique Frankenstein’s creature has thoroughly been established as a whole new genre in a musical world starved for inventiveness.
This year, by:Larm has the great honor of being host for a very special Blackjazz event: The Norwegian jazz metal band will premiere their upcoming album One One One in full for the very first time, two months before the album itself will even be heard by the public!
“One One One” was written by the father of “Blackjazz”, saxophone superman Jørgen Munkeby (only referred to as “Munkeby” in Shining’s militaristicly strict terms), in his studio in Oslo and in studios in Los Angeles. The album was recently mixed and mastered in Hollywood this January by Sean Beavan and Tom Baker, both of which has been paramount in the creation of the sounds of Nine Inch Nails and Marilyn Manson for the last 20 years. They both worked on “Blackjazz” and “Live Blackjazz”, so we expect nothing less this time around!
First single, “I Won’t Forget”, will be out on Universal in Norway February 8th. It’s a rocker like they’ve never rocked before! So there will at least be one song you’ve heard before this very special event with an extraordinary and unique band. The rest will remain a well-kept secret until you get to hear it for yourself live this evening.
“A study in coordinated whiplash.”
-The New York Times
“This is one of the most assaultive, addictive albums around”
-Allmusic.com
“Some radioactive alloy of jazz and black metal”
-The New York Times
“During the ’90s and the aughts, Norway established itself as a hot spot in both the jazz and metal undergrounds. So as we enter a new decade, it seems fitting that the country would spew forth a head-turning record that attempts to meld those two aesthetics: Blackjazz.”
-Time Out New York (“Stars of 2010”)
