Speaker: Interviewer: Jude Rogers
Neneh Cherry’s recent comeback with Norwegian/Swedish jazz outfit The Thing reminded everyone of her forceful presence in cross-border music over the past two decades.
Swedish by birth, Neneh spent much of her life in London and New York. Her first musical moves came with dub troupe New Age Steppers and post-punkers Rip Rig & Panic in the early 80s but she went on to have chart hits with the crossover hiphop/dub/pop of “Manchild”, “Buffalo Stance’” and “Kisses On The Wind”. Along the way she was swept up in the Bristol club scene and contributed to Massive Attack’s “Blue Lines”; Massive’s 3D and Mushroom returned the favour on her debut album, “Raw Like Sushi” (1989). More recently she has been appearing alongside members of her own family in CirKus, and has collaborated with The The, The Beloved, Pulp, Peter Gabriel, Groove Armada, Damon Albarn, Tricky and Youssou N’Dour. At by:Larm she’ll appear on stage with longtime manager and husband Cameron McVey, a music world legend in his own right.
Neneh Cherry will be interviewed by Jude Rogers, columnist and music writer for The Guardian, Observer, The Word and the New Statesman.
